Built by Wilbur Morse of Friendship in 1900, Blackjack was restored at the Sail, Power, and Steam Museum in Rockland, Maine. The launching ceremony included a team of oxen.
Schooner Heritage sails home to first in great schooner race

After gusty weather caused a short postponement, the Schooner Heritage raced across Penobscot Bay from Islesboro to Rockland and took first place in the annual Great Schooner Race.

This 118-year old boat has been lovingly restored by a team of professionals and volunteers. Friendship sloops were Maine’s first lobster boats and are symbolic of Maine’s fishery. Blackjack was originally built by Wilbur Morse in Friendship, Maine.

Over the course of two-plus years, Langley followed the meticulous restoration and racing program of Marilee, the Nathanael Herreshoff-designed classic New York 40 racing yacht. Todd French and his crew at French & Webb in Belfast Maine, went above and beyond a typical restoration, which included a unique interior and interchangeable rigs.

Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors, Inc. has unveiled a custom-designed poster for its 16th annual Maine Boat & Home Show, to be held August 10-12, 2018, on the waterfront in Rockland, Maine. Also show organizers have put out a call for owners of small craft to trailer their beloved boat(s) to Rockland for the 2018 Small-Boat Love-In. This will be the second annual groovy gathering of privately owned power, sail, and human-powered boats under 22 feet in length. It will take place in Buoy Park during the Aug. 10-12 show.

Illegal elver sales prompt state to shut down elver season two weeks early

The Maine Department of Marine Resources plans to shut down the elver fishery two weeks early, on May 24 at 6 a.m. because of illegal sales, which jeopardize the department’s ability to manage the fishery, according to a release from the department.
