Lyman-Morse: Volare
A vintage metal-hulled yacht gets a total makeover
The owner made his living fabricating aluminum parts for the airplane industry so when he and his wife were looking for a sailboat it’s no surprise that they focused their attention on yachts with aluminum hulls.
“He understands the material and what a great choice it is if you intend to go far and wide,” said Lyman-Morse broker Annie Lannigan. “It’s really easy to repair, and it doesn’t puncture like fiberglass.”
Although the owners had commissioned new boats in the past, including a 60-footer designed by Chuck Paine, this time around they chose to resurrect a classic: Volare, a 73-foot Ron Holland design that was built in New Zealand’s Sensation Yachts in 1998. Initially the couple sent it to Lyman-Morse in Thomaston, Maine, just to repower the boat and replace the generator. Eventually they decided to do more, and more, and more. By the time Volare was launched last spring after two years of work, the vessel had received a total overhaul.
The owners were so pleased with the work, the timeliness, the budget meeting, and the capacity at Lyman-Morse that they expanded the project to include replacing the teak decks, repainting the deck and cabin house, and installing new refrigeration. The refit included behind-the-scenes systems as well as work on the living spaces.
Every section of this boat has been reviewed by the Lyman-Morse staff of naval architects, master electricians, plumbers, and mechanics.
“Anything that didn’t work was made functional again,” said Lannigan.
The result is a gorgeous sailing yacht. With twin cockpits, four cabins, a raised salon, three heads and showers, and a large galley, Volare has plenty of room for a crowd to cruise aboard in comfort. But a self-tending jib, in-boom furling for the main, and other conveniences make handling this boat possible by just two people, as well.
After the refit was completed, life intervened for the owners who now cannot use the boat the way they intended. So Volare was put back on the market—a classy yacht in like-new condition.
